Baird Sampson Neuert Architects Inc. is one of Canada’s leading archiecture firms. BSN Architects was founded in 1972 by George Baird. Since then, the firm has executed a wide array of award winning building and landscape projects. The great range of these projects, which includes educational facilities, research centers, public housing, conservatories, auditoriums, museums, public parks, churches, and libraries demonstrates the breadth of the firm’s capabilities and consistent commitment to design excellence. Many projects involved an extensive consultation process and a close working relationship with implementation committees and representatives of community groups to achieve broader community development goals. The firm has been the recipient of two Governor General Awards for Architecture, Canada’s highest architectural honour and nine Canadian Architect Awards.
BSN Architects specializes in an integrated approach to landscape and architectural environments - an approach which engenders site-specific solutions and creates a unique sense of place. The firm’s interest in the fusion of building and landscape systems is approached from a comprehensive understanding of sustainability issues that addresses conservation, maintenance and operating energy, and greening strategies. This approach has fostered a special appreciation of the role of physical and social context in the development of design solutions. The firm is an innovator of urban design in Canada and was responsible for the creation of Toronto’s first development guidelines contained in the report onbuildingdowntown. BSN has been invited to participate in numerous urban design competitions and has been involved with creation of development plans for a number of major projects in the Greater Toronto Area including the St. Lawrence Neighbourhood, Harbourfront, and Ataratiri. It was a key member of the team that won the publicly run competition for a plan for Seaton, and has been responsible for urban design plans in Richmond Hill, Oshawa, Etobicoke, Mississauga, Aurora, Regina and Vancouver. The firm has also done site planning for the expansion of major institutions in Canada and the United States. These include plans for major facilities for the Niagara Parks Commission in Niagara Falls of which the Butterfly Conservatory has been widely published.
Our practice is also known for its master planning capabilities, having completed numerous major studies across Canada and the US. It has prepared a master plans for large ecologically significant sites such as the 2,500 acre Royal Botanical Garden. It has also completed master planning for heritage sites such as the Cranbrook Educational Community, in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan. The firm designed a number of celebrated public spaces, including Bay Adelaide Park, Ann Tindal Park, Post Office Aquare in St. Louis Missouri. Recently it has completed Master Plans for 3 Ontario university campuses.
Baird Sampson Neuert Architects has extensive experience in the programming of complex institutional buildings including city halls, central libraries and other public buildings. The firm was commissioned by the recently amalgamated Toronto District School Board to direct the consolidation of its entire administrative portfolio of approximately 1.1 million square feet of space with 2,100 employees. Currently our firm has been retained by Cornell University to undertake academic and public access programming at Plantations, a botanical garden on the periphery of the main campus.
